lifestyle destination: Barrie’s rich history & heritage

A landscape rich in forestry and one very significant trail would be the pathway to Barrie’s future. Over 200 years ago what is now Downtown Barrie was the beginning of the Nine Mile Portage. Here along the western shores of Kempenfelt Bay, Canada’s First Nations people rested on route to Lake Huron. During the War of 1812 the route was widened for transporting supplies and the area became a key supply depot for British forces. After the war, a small community settled at the end of the portage and was named after British Admiral Sir Robert Barrie.

The extension of the railway in 1867 to include Barrie allowed the town to expand its export of natural resources. Huge trees were logged and shipped out as masts for British ships and railway ties. During winter months, massive blocks of ice were cut from the frozen waters of Kempenfelt Bay and shipped down to Toronto, Buffalo, and New York for refrigeration purposes.
Over the period of 1870 to 1890, fires would ravage Barrie’s wood-framed downtown, giving rise to the moniker that Barrie was ”among the best burning towns in Canada.” The re-construction using brick turned Barrie into a commercial centre with this iconic brick streetscape remaining until this day.

Today Barrie celebrates its history and how it shaped the distinct character and sense of place the city is so proud of. Whether walking downtown to explore heritage buildings and
landmarks throughout the city, visiting the Base Borden Military Museum, to see equipment used during World War I and II, or taking a trip back in time to a pioneer village at the Simcoe County Museum, it is all in appreciation of Barrie’s natural and cultural heritage.

Great Gulf began in 1975 with a belief that we weren’t just building homes but creating spaces. From our first lot in Cambridge to residential, commercial and recreational developments in 20 markets across North America, we’ve come a long way. While a lot has changed in that time, one thing hasn’t: our unwavering commitment to building spaces that inspire people to live greatly. With an unparalleled dedication to every customer for more than 48 years and over 90,000 homes, we celebrate a well-earned reputation that can only be described with one word: GREAT.
